Miles - a poem
>> Wednesday, October 2, 2013
It's been a while since I've posted a poem on here. The one below is one I wrote last week after listening to Gavin DeGraw's song "Best I Ever Had." I love this song; it fills me with a hopeful energy and makes me want to dance. In so many ways I feel the best I've ever felt - so full of love and happiness and determination. Those feelings inspired this poem.
Miles
It sends me spinning, this sensation
Sipping sunshine off your lips
Like climbing until the city is tiny,
Dizzying beneath miles of tangerine sky
We fall into our lucky numbers,
Water colored into one another
You, forest green, sturdy and beautiful
My topography, my beginning and end
Me, nightfall blue, wild and melancholy
Your songbird, your last exception
The medication tumbles through me
But it is your palms, callused with music,
That stop the panic and staunch my past
Every morning nestled in our open spaces
Waking with sleep-soft eyes
Into an instantaneous embrace
Then, stumbling along the coast,
Drenched in summer’s ending
And freckled from our heat
We run for miles
And miles...
